MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A man with a history of child abuse complaints has been sent to prison for causing critical injuries to an infant.
Deshaun Marquez Laury, 31, of Muskegon has been sentenced to 40 months to 15 years in prison after he pleaded no contest to second-degree child abuse.
The case was filed in October 2017 after the 3-month-old suffered severe brain injuries, and Laury admitted that he shook the child, court records show.
The baby initially was reported in “grim” condition in the intensive care unit at Devos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, according to a neglect and abuse petition filed against Laury in 2017.
Laury’s parental rights were terminated in January 2018, records show. He was charged with felony child abuse and pleaded no contest on May 17, records show.
While that criminal case was pending, Laury was the subject of a second neglect and abuse petition involving a different child, records show. That child, who suffered injuries in August 2016, was 1-year-old at the time, according to the petition filed in January 2018.
The toddler had “significant bruising all over her body,” the petition stated. Laury’s rights to that child were terminated in June 2018, records show.
In 2008, child protective services workers in Georgia substantiated that Laury broke the arm of a 2-week-old baby, according to the 2017 petition.
