Kim Kardashian West says her ultimate goal from studying to take the bar exam is to open a law firm focused on her prison reform efforts.
“I just hope that one day I can start a firm that can help with prison reform,” Kardashian West told journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin at The New York Times’s DealBook conference on Wednesday in New York. “I’d love to hire these men and women that are behind bars, because they know the law better than most lawyers,” the 39-year-old reality TV star and beauty product mogul said.
Kardashian West told Vogue earlier this year that she is studying to take the bar in 2022 in the hopes of becoming a lawyer.
The “Keeping up With the Kardashians” star has been a vocal proponent of criminal justice reform.
Last year, she famously met with President Trump in the Oval Office and urged him to commute the sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, who was serving a life sentence on a nonviolent drug offense and money laundering charges. Days later, Trump granted clemency to the 64-year-old grandmother.
Asked Wednesday how she handles politics in terms of her brand, Kardashian West replied, “I am a really firm believer that you should be who you are, believe in what you want to believe in. And as a brand, I’m the type of person I can separate political beliefs from brands.”
“I don’t really push politics on my brands,” Kardashian West said, adding she “will speak up personally on politics when I have to and when I want to.”
Speaking about pushback from critics on her meeting with Trump, Kardashian West said, “For me, I focus on prison reform, and the president has done amazing things in prison reform. I will also speak up when I feel like something is not how I feel like the world should be, and that can be immigration or other things.”
“So many people advised me, ‘Don’t go to the White House,'” said Kardashian West, whose husband, rapper Kanye West, is a vocal Trump supporter. “And that didn’t make sense to me.”
“If someone can get out of prison and get their life back, versus my reputation of going to the White House – where there’s only one person on this planet that can make this decision and that would be the president – and that was even a question for the media,” Kardashian West continued.
“I would go see anyone in power that would have that decision to change someone’s life.”
