The Judicial System, is it Truly Impartial?
Currently, there is so much uncertainty looming in the United States. The Presidential race has become rife with conspiracy theories, doomsday declarations, and a general sense of insecurity. As the current President disputes the results before the completion of the ballot count, legal experts are predicting multiple lawsuits to help sway the election in his direction. Under normal circumstances, this would seem like a valid move when an election is this close. But, who is to say that the judges will be impartial?
The rushed appointment of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Amy Coney Barrett, was the final step in Trump’s plan to pack the Supreme Court in the event of a loss. During the past four years, he has appointed three Associate Justices of the Supreme Court. These appointments were widely reported on but what a lot of people were not aware of was how many other federal judges were appointed by Trump over the course of four years. As of November 4th, of this year, he has appointed a whooping 220 Article III judges.
Alongside the three supreme court appointees, Trump has appointed 53 judges for the United States courts of appeals, 162 judges for the United States district courts, and two judges for the United States Court of International Trade. With this sheer number of judges who are loyal to Trump, how can one believe that there will be an impartial review of a ballot dispute?
It is not only that Trump has packed the federal courts with judges who would be partial to his case but there has also been a lot of information about judges who violate the trust of the citizens of the United States by taking bribes and by hiding money in offshore accounts. According to an independent website, www.judicialoversight.net, there are three current Los Angeles sitting judges that have committed money laundering by stashing money in offshore account. There are three judges named on the website, Richard L. Fruin Jr., Holly J. Fujie, and Michael M. Johnson all who have tremendous sway in Los Angeles County.
There are other examples of Judicial misconduct that includes financial gain. These three examples above are just the tip of the iceberg to show that judges can potentially be bought to help Trump win a second term. Financial gain could be a huge motivating factor to help Trump win this election for those judges that he did not appoint.
The judicial system is rampant with allegations of misconduct. According to an investigation done by Reuters, “Reuters identified and reviewed 1,509 cases from the last dozen years – 2008 through 2019 – in which judges resigned, retired or were publicly disciplined following accusations of misconduct. In addition, reporters identified another 3,613 cases from 2008 through 2018 in which states disciplined wayward judges but kept hidden from the public key details of their offenses – including the identities of the judges themselves.”
The statistics quoted above paint an astounding picture of how corrupt the legal system has become. The reason why Trump was so easily able to manipulate the system during his presidency is because the system is already so corrupt. For years, judges like the three mentioned above have been using their positions for personal gain. This is tactic is not new for Trump, he has managed to buy himself out of legal trouble before and now he has multiple judges that owe their position of power to him. This time, the consequences are dire because they directly conflict with the founding principles of this country.
It is being reported that there are already multiple lawsuits being filed across the nation by Trump to stall this election. The Trump campaign has filed a lawsuit to stop counting ballots in Michigan and it is being reported that if Pennsylvania flips, his campaign will file a lawsuit to dispute the results. Trump is currently mapping out his legal strategy to stall this election as long as possible and it might actually work because he has spent the last four years stacking the courts in his favor in anticipation of this very thing happening. Also, it has been proven that most judges are not above taking money to influence an outcome.
As the lawsuits continue to roll out, the citizens of this country wait in anticipation to see whether his efforts to stack the courts and exert his influence will work in his favor. If his tactics do work, then it will be the death of a democracy.
The fate of this country rests in the hands of judges that are not guaranteed to be impartial. It is a fact that a majority of judges in this country have been influenced by money and politics. The system needs to change, and these corrupt judges need to be held accountable for their misdeeds. It is time for a change otherwise we risk becoming no better than a country lorded over by a dictator.
